Should newspapers convert to e-publishing?
Today, most vendors providing newspapers
with software or a service to post their print
editions to the Internet typically do virtually
nothing to help their clients websites
consistently make money…until now!
Virtual News Net (VNN) delivers the most innovative
Online Electronic Publishing
(OLEP) system in the small to
mid-sized newspaper marketplace.
In a recent survey of newspaper publishing executives who had recently
invested in an online website version of their newspaper,
it was found that they experienced three major
frustrations and problems when considering
whether to launch or after they launched an online edition of their
paper:
- Their
Online Edition Won't Consistently Make Money...If At All:
The notion held by many small to mid-sized newspaper publishers is they won’t be able to
generate additional revenue through an online edition of their print paper. This just
not the case; studies have shown that many print advertisers are amenable to posting
their ads to the online edition for a fee.
In fact, Borrell Associates recently reported that 83 percent of the newspapers the
company surveyed reported having profitable online editions. The Borrell study found
that the average newspaper online edition produced revenues of $17.70 per unit of
circulation. The smallest newspapers earned about $3.64 per unit, or $36,400 for
papers with 10,000 circulation. Larger newspapers, according to the Borrell research,
had average revenues of $27.10 per unit, meaning a paper with a 200,000 circulation
brought in $5.42 million from the Web in 2003. The Borrell study cited classifieds as
being key to newspapers' online success.
- Are
Concerned That An On-line Newspaper Is Too Hard To Manage:
Newspaper executives
indicated that their current vendor’s online newspaper offering could
be automated more extensively to avoid redundancies in operations
when moving from the print to online versions of their newspapers. Virtual
News Net has automated many of the processes now being done manually
by our competitors. There is absolutely no need to hire additional technical staff to run
your online edition.
- Believe
That Online Versions Are Too Expensive For A Small To Mid-sized
Newspapers:
Many newspaper executives are convinced that having
an online presence is going to wind up being a cost center with
no hope of breaking even - let alone making a
profit. They do not realize that having an Internet version of their
paper can increase revenue via classified
advertising and is an
absolute competitive MUST. Newspapers
that do not dominate their trade area on the Internet will ultimately
lose out to a competitor that does. And
someone will dominate if you don’t. Our FREE Report will tell why it is absolutely essential to be on the
Internet to guarantee the long term survival of your publication.
